    Hey, Patti

In answer to your question, heck these two articles: Yoast about sidebars and this Nathan Rice article on duplicate content. I put some more info on my blog in response. Let me know if you understand the articles differently. Might just be how my own settings were for indexing – some of which I modified.

When I went theme hunting, I had no idea how important some of the SEO and options might be. Now my darn theme has grown on me so I’ll just have to fiddle (which I enjoy). I’m going to check your store next, though. :)

Thanks for the blogroll! Just caught that up there!

I read the Nathan Rice article, and just peaked at the Yoast article (I’ll have to read that one later) and I did understand the sidebar mention differently. I don’t think Google actually considers the sidebar ‘content’ as such. As for the links in the sidebar, I have to agree. MOST of my sidebar links are to my own website pages, or sites I want to promote (again, the reason for starting this blog in the first place…I’m really not that interesting ;) ). I’ve set up a links page for most of the permanent outgoing links.

It’d be interesting to get some feedback from someone who knows whether or not sidebars are considered content. Maybe I’ll snoop around when I get some time.

As far as the store theme, it’s pretty ugly right out of the box, but it’s HIGHLY customizable and there are tabs for each area of customization. Just to get an idea I’ve taken a screenshot
    screenshot of theme option tabs

My store doesn’t look fantastic, but I haven’t really had time to do it justice yet…my fault. So far the theme is the easiest I’ve found to customize without the use of separate plugins (though I do have a few of those as well).

I’m off to check on your reply to my post. Let me know (or anyone out there reading this care to comment?) if you find out something definate about the sidebar issue!

    Hi,

Here are my 2 cents. :D

I would not worry much about page rank. It is pretty much obsolete. As far as I know the algorithm to calculate page rank belongs to Stanford University and is only a minor factor in your SERP rank. Much more important is your position in the search engine results pages for your targeted search queries.

Search engines do not make a difference between sidebar and content. What counts is the keyword density. Keyword focussed pages with quality content are key to a top position in the SERPs. A lot of unfocussed content in the sidebar will bring down your relevance.

Also, google is not fond of having many outgoing links per page.

Ultimately Steve, you’re right. I used to carry a PR5 on my website home page, and now it’s a 3 due to years of neglect, but I still come up pretty high in the SERPs for my targeted keywords. The goal is to pull in relevent traffic, period. BUT, it can’t hurt to avoid offending the Google gods right? I mean if there’s a small change I can make in the structure of my blog that’s going to make a big difference, why not change it?
